RetirementCommunities-US.com Overview
Most senior living facilities offer a combination of independent living, assisted living or skilled nursing facilities. Initially, I was going to create this website to have a menu for each of these categories. Because this overlap in services would make this very difficult to do, I have combined all of the categories into a directory with a single menu and sorted by state.
If you are unsure of the meanings of the differences in these services, you are not alone. I very recently had a crash course in all of this, helping my wife find care for her Grandmother. We spent a lot of time on the internet and telephone finding answers to these types of questions. That is what prompted me to create this website. Hopefully you will find information that helps you during this difficult time. Or maybe you are in perfect health and just need the phone number of a retirement community or senior apartments listed in this directory. Either way, I hope you find what you need!
Independent Living or Retirement Communities: Just what it sounds like. These facilities vary from apartment condo homes to retirement communities that look like any other neighborhood. Services offered at these facilities are non-medical in nature.
Assisted Living: Assisted living facilities are very similar to independent living facilities except that services are provided for the residents. These services vary and can be customized for the individuals unique needs. These services range from providing meals to assistance in organizing required medication so that it is all administered appropriately. Any medical services offered can be performed by a licensed nurse and do not require a registered nurse.
Skilled Nursing or Convalescence Home: These facilities are for those in need of much more intensive care than assisted living services can provide. A skilled nursing facility is required if a person can not care for themselves without minimal assistance. This may be due to mental or physical impairments. At a skilled nursing facility, medical services can only be provided by or under the supervision of a registered nurse.
For a cost comparison of various types of elder care living take a look at Medicare's Long Term Care cost comparison chart. You should probably also check Medicare's "Program for All Inclusive Care for the Elderly" (PACE) and the "Social Managed Care Plan" to see if your loved one is eligible. Information and eligibility requirements can be found here.
Long Term Care Insurance
While cleaning out my wife's Grandmother's home we found a long term care insurance policy that she had stopped paying for years ago and had forgotten about. Had the policy been current, it would have provided a very large sum of money to help offset the $72,000 per year cost of her nursing home. It still paid for a couple of months, which was a great help.
I am now adding a page with some reputable long term care insurance companies.
